A strong finish from Dublin saw them claim their first win this season in Division One at the expense of Monaghan, while Derry and Down secured important victories on Saturday.

At Croke Park, a late goal from Joe Quigley proved the game-breaker as Dublin saw off Monaghan who are still without a point from their opening three games.

Derry secured a second straight victory as goals from Shane McGuigan, Lachlan Murray and Paul Cassidy proved the difference in their 3-15 to 1-8 win away to Westmeath.

Down survived a late comeback to maintain their 100% record in Division Three by inflicting a first defeat on promotion rivals Westmeath, winning 2-15 to 1-15 at Pairc Esler.

Dublin finish strong to deny Monaghan

Eight points from the boot of Con O'Callaghan helped Dublin get off the mark in Division One as they condemned Monaghan to a third-straight loss.

It was a case of what might have been for the Ulster side as they failed to take a number of goalscoring opportunities as the Dubs did find the net late on through Quigley to bank their first win.

Early missed opportunities for both were a prelude of things to come, but Dublin did twice edge ahead through Ciaran Kilkenny and Con O'Callaghan with Ryan McAnespie and Micheal Bannigan responding, while Ross McGarry's shot at goal rattled the crossbar for the hosts.

Monaghan then edged ahead twice with O'Callaghan and Sean Bugler cancelling out Oisin McGorman and Bannigan. Meanwhile, Dublin's stand-in goalkeeper Hugh O'Sullivan saved from Stephen O'Hanlon and later in the half, produced a double stop from Micheal McCarville and McGorman.

A two-pointer from Dessie Ward was the highlight of the opening half, with Dublin replying with three points on the spin but the first could have been a goal when Luke Breathnach blazed over.

Ward would then help the ball onto the base of the post late in the half, but an Aaron Carey score restored parity with the sides level at 0-7 apiece at the break.

Monaghan made the better start to the second period with five of the first six scores, but Ward could have had more when his effort grazed the top of the bar on the way over.

Helped by an O'Callaghan two-pointer, Dublin drew level before Bugler then saw a shot cannon off the bar and over.

Monaghan rallied with four points, including a two-point free from Rory Beggan, to move three clear but Bannigan had a goal chance in this time when he improvised to swivel on the bar but watched as the effort flew past the post.

The Dubs would hit back with another two-pointer from O'Callaghan before they forced a turnover at midfield and broke with pace, leading to Quigley blasting high to the net.

They saw it out with three of the final four scores to get their first points of the campaign, while Monaghan's wait goes on.

Derry make it back-to-back wins

In Newbridge, Derry built on their round two victory over Tyrone to overcome a stern challenge from Kildare.

Ciaran Meenagh's side were dealt an early blow when Conor Glass was shown a red card in the sixth minute, but had built a two-point advantage when Shane McGuigan thumped home their first goal after a quarter of an hour.

The Lilywhites responded brilliantly with three scores but, in between Derry black cards, the hosts would also be permanently reduced to 14 with Alex Berine sent off six minutes before the break.

Still, they finished the half well with Brian McLoughlin finding the net from a free as the Leinster side opened a 1-10 to 1-6 lead.

A point from Ben Loakman pushed the gap out to five early in the second half, but Derry would respond in fine style as Cassidy and Murray scored goals in the space of a minute to move their side back in front.

Derry would push on with goalkeeper Shea McGuckin kicking a 45 and Murray pointing before Callum Bolton and Matthew Downey traded.

A two-pointer from Loakman was cancelled out by a Niall Loughlin brace and then McGuigan and Conor Doherty replied to another two-pointer from the Kildare attacker.

The hosts got to within one with five to play, but late scores from McGuigan and Murray sealed the Derry win.

Down maintain perfect start

At Pairc Esler, the sides were level three times across the opening 17 minutes as Luke Loughlin's two-pointer kept the Westmeath alive against Down.

The Mourne men led 1-10 to 0-5 at the break mainly thanks to an unanswered spurt of 1-5 before the whistle.

Ceilum Doherty and Daniel Guinness were on target twice each before Ryan Magill punched home with the final action of the half.

Down looked to be cruising to victory when John McGeough punched Pat Havern's point attempt into the net on 50 minutes, giving the hosts a 13-point lead.

While a series of substitutions from Conor Laverty seemed to disrupt the home sides momentum, Mark McHugh's side got 1-4 from substitutes Robbie Forde and Brian Cooney.

Westmeath hit 1-8 without reply, including a second orange flag from Loughlin and a goal from Cooney to leave two between the teams entering the final five minutes.

Down would go almost 20 minutes without a score of their own before Doherty's fourth of the night settled nerves and sealed a three point win.
