Ayr brand late Gayfield call-off 'unacceptable'

Ayr United will raise "serious concerns" with the SPFL after their Scottish Championship match with Arbroath on Saturday was postponed a little more than an hour before kick-off.

Referee Ross Hardie made the decision at Gayfield just before 14:00 GMT because of a frozen section of pitch.

"All associated with Ayr United are beyond disappointed with the events that led to today's cancellation," the club said in a statement.

"On arriving at the ground it became clear that there was an area of the pitch that was frozen and would have never passed an inspection. This would have been clear to anyone who walked across it at any point on the day of the game.

"The fact this was not highlighted to us or the league this morning which resulted in our players, staff and fans travelling over 250 miles for a match that would never start is unacceptable.

"We can only apologise to our supporters who travelled and confirm that we will make representation to the SPFL to highlight our serious concerns."

Dunfermline v Partick Thistle in the Championship also postponed on Saturday because of a frozen pitch.
