Amica, Boston Celtics honor local Special Olympian with VIP experience

The Boston Celtics have long had a wideranging commitment to the community in which they play – and for the Celtics, that means all of New England, not just the city in which they play. To such an end, Amica insurance and the Celtics gave a Rhode Island Special Olympian the full VIP treatment at the Boston - Milwaukee Bucks contest last week.

Part of its longtime "Beyond the Patch" initiative with the Celtics, Amica Mutual Insurance Company worked to help create an unforgettable game-day experience for that athlete and his family at TD Garden on Sunday, Feb. 1. Per a release, Amica and the Celtics use the initiative to collaborate with organizations across New England to provide a distinct experience to honor such individuals throughout the region. Michael Bullock of East Providence, Rhode Island, was honored, and has been a Special Olympics athlete since 1996 in basketball and track and field.

A Special Olympics athlete for nearly thirty years, Bullock related that basketball is a special sport for him because “it takes teamwork to play well.” He and his family sat courtside for the game, with behind-the-scenes access to players and an on-court photo session with the Celtics’ team photographer. Bullock was also gifted a jersey pregame.

“Moments like this are what our Beyond the Patch initiative is all about,” Ted Shallcross, Amica president and CEO, said.

“Michael’s dedication as a Special Olympics athlete and his love for the game embody the spirit of teamwork and perseverance that sports can inspire. We were honored to welcome him and his family to TD Garden and create an experience we hope they’ll remember for a long time.”
