Lionel Messi now playing for Inter Miami has explained why he never accepted the option to play for Spain despite growing up in Spanish football with Barcelona.
Messi spoke during an appearance on the Miro De Atras podcast, hosted by Argentine goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman alongside Mexican journalist Adrian Marcelo.
During the discussion, the World Cup winner reflected on personal moments from his career and decisions that shaped his journey.
Spain option was Real
Messi confirmed that there was a real chance for him to wear Spain’s shirt early in his career. Spanish officials hinted at the idea while he was progressing through Barcelona’s youth system having spent most of his teenage years in Spain.
He explained that such situations are common for young players who move abroad at early age and develop inside major European clubs. According to Messi, the approach from Spain was natural and respectful.
“My Heart was Always with Argentina”
Despite the opportunity, Messi said he never felt confused about his choice. He stressed that his wish was always clea, to play for Argentina.
Spanish newspaper Marca quoted Messi as saying that representing Argentina was his only real dream even though he left Rosario for Barcelona at a very young age.
He added that the emotional link with his home country was stronger than any sporting advantage Spain could offer.
