France's Guillaume Cizeron sealed back-to-back Olympic ice dance gold medals with new partner Laurence Fournier Beaudry on Wednesday.
Fournier Beaudry and Cizeron racked up 90.18 points to take the lead after Monday's rhythm dance, in which a number of technical elements must be performed.
They looked effortless in Wednesday's deciding free dance routine, gliding round the Milan ice to the soundtrack of "The Whale" for a combined top score of 225.82.
"Oh my God, it's just surreal. To look back at everything that we've been through. Determination and strength, of this one (Fournier Beaudry) and of our team, the support that we've had, the love that we've had," Cizeron said.
US favourites Madison Chock and Evan Bates, who are married, took silver on 224.39 after a sultry and smooth free dance.
They are triple world champions and helped the US win successive team event golds on Sunday, edging their French rivals, but missed out on the dance title after a slight error in the pattern steps on Monday.
Canadian duo Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier finished third after a vibrant dance to a cover version of Don McLean's "Vincent" by British buskers Govardo. They had also been third in the rhythm routine.
Cizeron won 2022 gold together with Gabrielle Papadakis before a high profile falling out between the two. He also won the European title last month with Canadian-born Fournier Beaudry.
"I really wanted to enjoy the moment out there, and I know that we're never going to get those moments again. Just enjoying being on the ice with Guillaume, sharing that journey, is just really amazing," Fournier Beaudry said.
In 2022, Chock and Bates missed the podium in fourth.
Other pairs' notable music included from the movie Dune 2, British dance group Faithless and Icelandic pop star Björk.
In men's individual competition, US wunderkind Ilia Malinin leads after Tuesday's short routine, with the decisive free skating set for Friday. Pairs and women's medals are next week.
