Canadian speedskater Beatrice Lamarche finishes fifth in 1,000m at Olympics

Beatrice Lamarche fell just short of the podium in her Olympic debut on Monday.

The Quebec City speedskater finished fifth in the women’s 1,000 metres at Milano Cortina 2026.

Lamarche sat in third after skating in the second-last pair. But Jutta Leerdam of the Netherlands raced to gold with an Olympic record time of one minute 12.31 seconds in the final pair, while Miho Takagi of Japan took bronze.

Femke Kok of the Netherlands was second.

Lamarche was 0.78 seconds back of Tagaki for bronze.

Lamarche, 27, finished in the top-10 in all five 1,000-metre races in World Cup competition this season, including a career-best third at the season opener in Salt Lake City.

Lamarche’s father, Benoit, competed in speedskating at the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo and the 1988 Winter Games in Calgary.

Lamarche’s roommate in Milan, Valerie Maltais, took bronze for Canada’s first Milano Cortina medal on Saturday in the women’s 3,000 metres.
