Torry Hold says Rams letting Cooper Kupp go was a mistake

The Los Angeles Rams watched this February as their former receiver, Cooper Kupp, hoisted another Super Bowl trophy — but this time amongst his Seattle Seahawks teammates instead. It was a moment that had been in the making 11 months earlier when L.A. released Kupp following an illustrious eight years with the team.

Torry Holt, an ex-Rams receiver himself who played 11 seasons with the team, told FanDuel TV's Kay Adams that he understood the decision at the time but that, ultimately, letting Kupp go was a mistake.

“Based off of watching him in Seattle. Yes [it was a mistake to let him go]," Holt said. "What he could have provided to the Rams—absolutely. Not only his production, but just being the mold that model of consistency out in Los Angeles would have been fantastic. But again, I get it. I understand the business. I’m happy Cooper went somewhere that wanted him.”

Kupp didn't have a productive year in Seattle (by his standards, at least). He caught just 47 passes for 593 yards and two touchdowns during the regular season, which was a career-low for Kupp in years he played at least 10 games.

However, Kupp was a big contributor in the postseason. He finished with 15 receptions for 157 yards and one touchdown in Seattle's three playoff games, including a team-high six receptions for 61 yards in Super Bowl LX.

There's no telling how Kupp would have fared if he stayed in L.A., even if the Rams still brought in Davante Adams. He likely would have retained a similar role as a receiver who was not tasked with much, but someone who could provide a stable floor when needed. Coincidentally, the Rams lacked a true WR3 in 2025 — especially when Adams went down with a hamstring injury at the end of the year when L.A. was battling for the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

Revisionist history is never a good thing to dwell on, but I'm sure Les Snead and Sean McVay watched their former star receiver with bittersweet thoughts in their hearts and minds. And if Kupp returns to the field, they'll see him again in 2026 from the opposite sideline once more.
