How does curling scoring work at 2026 Winter Olympics?

Curling, as is the tradition every four years, becomes a beloved sport for Olympics viewers who fall in love all over again with the sport played on ice with giant stones from Scotland and brooms.

But if you're here, you might be a little confused with how the scoring works. That's OK! We're going to keep it simple so that you can follow along during the Olympics.

The goal is to get the stone as close to the center of "the house" (that area inside the blue circle) as possible. When each "end" (when all stones have been thrown) is over, the team with the stone nearest to the center gets one point. Then, the team can score additional points for each stone that is nearer to the center than those of their opponents. Both teams can't score at the same time. So if you have two stones closer to center than your opponents', you get two points.

Got it? Good!

What is a power play in curling?

Only in mixed doubles is this a thing: Once a game, you can put in stones in any position before the "end" begins. So there' some strategy mixed in.

What is the hammer in curling?

If you have the final stone of the round, that's "the hammer." It's a big advantage to have the last one.
