Former Wisconsin basketball star inks 10-day deal with Boston Celtics
Former Wisconsin basketball star John Tonje inked a 10-day contract with the Boston Celtics on Thursday.
The Celtics, who acquired Tonje on Feb. 5 in a deal involving big man Chris Boucher, converted the former Badger to their active roster following the All-Star break. The Nebraska native joins Dalano Banton as the other Celtic to sign a 10-day deal to join the standard roster on Thursday.
After being drafted by the Utah Jazz with the No. 53 overall pick of the 2025 NBA draft in June, Tonje only saw the floor in two games for Utah during the 2025-26 regular season. In those two contests, he totaled two points and four rebounds across 14 minutes.
In 32 games with team's G League affiliate, the Salt Lake City Stars, the former Badger averaged 18 points, 4.1 boards, 4.1 dimes and one steal off 46.7% from the field, 37.6% from 3 and 92.8% from the free-throw line in just over 30 minutes per game.

Situated 5 1/2 games back of the Detroit Pistons, the Celtics can now utilize Tonje in a depth role off the bench following the All-Star break. He will suit up in a rotation behind Jaylen Brown, Hugo Gonzales, Sam Hauser, Ron Harper Jr. and Jordan Walsh.
Despite having yet to find his footing at the professional level, Tonje displayed his dexterity during his sole season at Wisconsin in 2024-25. In 37 games, he averaged 19.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists off 46.5% from the field, 38.8% from 3 and 90.9% from the charity stripe.
