Shubman Gill meets Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, shares picture on Instagram

New Delhi [India], September 11 (ANI): India’s ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill met Dutch footballer and Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk and posed for a picture on Instagram on Friday. xsportfeed.quest

Gill shared a picture of himself posing alongside the Liverpool defender in an Instagram photo carousel, captioning the post simply, “VVD,” offering a glimpse of the crossover between cricket and football’s biggest names.

Gill recently led India to a 1-0 Test series victory over Sri Lanka while also producing consistent performances during the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. The India batter has amassed over 1,000 runs in the ongoing cycle, including centuries against England, West Indies and Afghanistan. His impressive run-scoring earned him the prestigious Polly Umrigar Award for Best International Cricketer at the BCCI Naman Awards. Gill has also remained a key figure for Gujarat Titans in the IPL, where he scored more than 700 runs during the 2026 season.

Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk remains a key figure for both Liverpool and the Netherlands. The Dutch defender continues to captain Liverpool as they look to reclaim the Premier League title after Arsenal (2025/26 winners) ended their reign as champions following their 2024/25 season win.

Liverpool currently sit sixth in the Premier League 2026/27 standings. They have drawn against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest, while securing a win over Ipswich Town. They will next face Fulham on Saturday. (ANI)

“I enjoyed the standing ovation”: Pakistan’s Razaullah after fearless 81 on Test debut

Birmingham [UK], September 12 (ANI): A standing ovation at Edgbaston brought a broad smile to Pakistan debutant Razaullah’s face as the 21-year-old seamer walked off after a fearless 81 against England, an innings that transformed a seemingly one-sided contest into a competitive finish.

“I enjoyed the standing ovation," Razaullah grinned later at the press conference, according to Cricinfo. “I like to enjoy life, and I was relishing the moment."

Coming in at No. 9 with Pakistan still facing the prospect of an innings defeat, Razaullah took the attack to England’s pace trio of Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue, smashing nine sixes in his 63-ball knock.

His assault helped Pakistan recover from a difficult position and eventually set England a target of 130 after being bowled out for 449 on the third day of the final Test.

Razaullah had little regard for the reputation of England’s attack as he repeatedly took on the short ball, an approach that had troubled several of Pakistan’s specialist batters during the series.

“I was being selective with which balls to slog, but they all seemed within range," he said casually.

“I wanted to take it as deep as possible. I wasn’t scared of pace. I wanted to punish the balls from Archer that landed on a hard length. There’s nothing to be scared of when you’re playing for your country. I was just enjoying myself," the young seamer added.

Razaullah’s fifty came in just 43 balls, the fastest half-century by a Pakistan batter on Test debut. He struck a six to reach the landmark and continued attacking as England struggled to contain his clean hitting.

“My favourite ball [to face] is the short ball. I just believed in myself. I thought if I played 50 balls, I’d get a positive result. And thankfully that happened," he said.

He also shared a crucial 121-run partnership with Mohammad Abbas, who made 42, to frustrate England’s attempt to wrap up the match quickly. Tongue eventually broke the stand by dismissing Abbas, before Razaullah followed soon after, missing out on what could have been a remarkable century on debut.

The youngster’s innings came after Pakistan’s top order had laid the platform for a recovery. Shan Masood scored 95, while Azan Awais made 59 in a 125-run opening partnership after Pakistan had lost both openers for no runs.

Babar Azam then added 76 as Pakistan recovered strongly from their disastrous start and ultimately finished with 449, just four runs short of England’s first-innings total of 453.

Razaullah’s late assault ensured England had to bat again and left them needing 130 runs to win, giving Pakistan an opportunity to avoid a 3-0 series whitewash.

The youngster, who had scored a first-class century as an opener after asking his coach to promote him up the order, showed the same attacking intent despite stepping into a vastly different challenge at No. 9 on his Test debut. (ANI)

US Open 2026: Frances Tiafoe’s dream runs comes to crashing end as Ben Shelton sets up finale meeting with Alexander Zverev

Ben Shelton came from a set down to beat fellow American Frances Tiafoe, who was on a dream run, by 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 in the US Open 2026 semi-final and book his place in his first-ever Grand Slam final.

The all-American clash at Arthur Ashe Stadium lasted for more than three hours with Tiafoe making the better start before Shelton gradually took control of the match. Shelton finished with 18 aces and used his serve to put Tiafoe under pressure in the final three sets.

Tiafoe looked comfortable in the opening set. He took his chances when they came and managed to break Shelton to move ahead. Shelton, however, responded immediately in the second set. He found more consistency from the baseline and began winning the shorter points behind his powerful first serve.

After levelling the match at one set apiece, Shelton continued to apply pressure. He broke Tiafoe in the third set and did enough on his own serve to move within one set of the final.

The fourth set was the closest of the match. Both players held their serves for long periods, but Shelton kept forcing Tiafoe into difficult positions with his pace and aggressive returning. At 5-5, Shelton finally got the breakthrough. He then served out the match to complete the comeback.

The victory also continued Shelton’s impressive run through the tournament. The eighth seed opened his campaign by beating Tallon Griekspoor in four sets. He then got past Hubert Hurkacz in four sets before overcoming Denis Shapovalov in another four-set contest. Shelton defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 in the fourth round.

His biggest win came in the quarter-finals, where he defeated defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thriller. Shelton won 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(10-7), with the match finishing at 3:33 a.m.

Shelton’s win over Tiafoe now sets up a final against Alexander Zverev. The German defeated Karen Khachanov in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(7), 7-6(6), in the other semi-final.

The final will be Shelton’s first Grand Slam title match. Zverev, meanwhile, will be playing in his third straight Grand Slam final. Shelton has lost all five of his previous meetings with Zverev, but this will be their first meeting at a Grand Slam.

After coming victorious in the all American semi-final, Ben Shelton will be hoping to emulate Andy Riddock and become the first from the USA to win an US Open title since 2003. Riddock was the last one to clinch the Grand Slam title 23 years ago. The finale will take place tomorrow on Sunday, September 13 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Asian Games Nagoya: Time to Deliver India’s Best-Ever Coverage

Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium (PC: Asian Games Aichi Nagoya)

In exactly a week from now, the Asian Games will begin in Nagoya. It is perhaps the most important event on India’s sporting calendar in 2026-27 and could turn into India’s best-ever Asian Games. Everyone you speak to is cautiously optimistic about India’s chances. PT Usha, the President of the IOA, was emphatic when she said, “I expect it to be the best Asian Games ever.”

With multiple events taking place simultaneously, it is impossible for a single reporter on the ground to cover everything. Distances are not easy to overcome, and navigating between multiple venues in a day is a challenge. To bring the best coverage to our viewers and readers, you need multiple reporters on the ground. And that’s what we will do.

Much like in Paris in 2024 and Glasgow in July-August, we will have a dedicated reporter covering every Indian medal event. So, if shooting, hockey, rowing and boxing are taking place at the same time, we will have dedicated reporters at each venue. Coverage will therefore be real-time and immediate. You won’t need to wait until the evening or the following morning; you will have every update within seconds, directly from the venue.

The moment an athlete wins a medal, the reporter can bring you the mixed-zone reaction, followed by an in-depth interview.

It is equally pertinent to state that a Games of this scale isn’t just about medals won or records broken. The story of Nagoya’s transformation, the way the organisers have gone about building sustainable legacies and the cultural integration are equally important stories to document. That’s what Sharmistha Gooptu will focus on: understanding the Games through a macro lens and noting the lessons for India as it looks ahead to 2030.

Personally, I want to spend time covering shooting, badminton and boxing. These are the sports in which India stand a chance at LA28, and it is important to take stock of where we are. Can Esha Singh, who has been in red-hot form, handle the pressure of the Asian Games and win multiple medals? Can Manu Bhaker and Jelena Arunovic recreate the same magic that Manu produced with the legendary Jaspal Rana? Can Suruchi Inder Singh remain as consistent as she has been over the past year and more?

In badminton, Satwik and Chirag are determined to defend their title, and it will be interesting to see how they go about it. Their success at the China Masters has raised hopes, and I am hopeful of a very good effort from the contingent.

In the past, it was about newspaper reports the following day. Then came agency reports within hours. Now, it is all about digital and real-time coverage. You have to be prompt and yet go in depth. You have to ensure quality reporting in real time. Such coverage is only possible if you have multiple experienced reporters on the ground.

For over a year, we have planned for the Asian Games. With a strong five-member team on the ground in Nagoya, it is time to execute and bring the best coverage to our viewers and readers.
