England captain Ben Stokes has warned that taking a strict stance against players participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) could lead to some cricketers walking away from international cricket altogether. Archer misses Lord’s Test after IPL campaign

Archer will miss the first Test against New Zealand national cricket team at Lord’s after representing the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. The pacer is currently in Barbados and is not expected to return to England until after the opening Test, casting doubt over his availability for the second match at The Oval.

The situation has drawn criticism from former England captains, but Stokes urged observers to understand the modern realities of the game.

“In an ideal world, you would have every player available whenever you need them. But cricket doesn’t work like that anymore,” Stokes said. “If the situation is handled differently, players like Jofra might choose not to play for England again, and that wouldn’t benefit anyone.”

Changing landscape of modern cricket

Stokes highlighted how the cricketing environment has changed dramatically over the past decade, with franchise leagues providing opportunities that were unavailable to previous generations.

“A lot of the criticism comes from people comparing it with their playing days. The landscape is completely different now,” he said. “There are far more opportunities for players, and you have to accept that reality.”
