The Padres have signed ex‑Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos, who will join the club two days after Philadelphia released him. Castellanos, a two‑time All‑Star, will be paid the $780,000 major‑league minimum while the Phillies cover the rest of his $20 million salary. He is expected to compete for a spot at first base, a position the Padres are still filling after parting ways with Luis Arraez.
In addition, the Padres added right‑handers Griffin Canning and Germán Márquez to give depth to a rotation that has lost Dylan Cease and Robert Suarez to free agency. Canning, who spent six seasons with the Angels and had a 3.77 ERA last year before an Achilles injury, and Márquez, who has spent the past season with the Dodgers, could vie for the two open spots behind Pivetta, Musgrove and King.
