Four other groups have formally entered the process to potentially buy the Major League Baseball franchise, according to Dennis Lin and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

The rival bidders, according to multiple reports, include:

• Joe Lacob, the Golden State Warriors co-owner who purchased a majority share of the NBA franchise in 2020

• José Feliciano, a private equity who co-owns Chelsea of the English Premier League

Dan Friedkin, a private investor whose diversified holdings include AS Roma and Everton FC

The identity of the fifth bidder remains a mystery to the public, but The Athletic reports that each of the bids is “strong.”

Brees, who played for the San Diego Chargers from 2001-05 before finishing his 20-year career with the New Orleans Saints, is involved with marketing the athleisure brand Vuori. Kudla, Vuori’s founder, went to the University of San Diego.

The Seidler family announced in November it was exploring a sale of the Padres.

A settlement between Peter Seidler’s widow, Sheel, and Seidler’s brothers who assumed control of the team, was approved by a Texas probate judge on Thursday — ending a legal battle that lasted more than a year, and allowing the sale of the franchise to move forward.
