If the latest New York Giants rumor is true, it's bad news for running backs Cam Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy.

According to ESPN's Jordan Raanan, word around the 2026 NFL Combine is the Giants are taking a long look at some of the top available running backs, both in free agency and the 2026 NFL draft.

Raanan specifically mentions top running back prospect Jeremiyah Love, and two of the best available running backs in free agency, Travis Etienne and Kenneth Walker.

"Something you hear about Giants at combine: They're seriously looking at some of the top running backs, both in draft + free agency," Raanan said. "Players like Notre Dame's Jeremiyah Love, Travis Etienne and Kenneth Walker. There seems to be a clear focus on becoming a more physical run-heavy team."

All three of those backs figure to be costly.

We would expect Love to come off the board in the top half of the first round, so the Giants will have to use their No. 5 pick on him. The Giants could probably trade back a few spots and acquire more picks and still get Love.

Spotrac projects Walker is going to land a deal that pays him $36 million over four years, and we believe he'll get it. Meanwhile, Spotrac projects Etienne will get $13 million over two years, although we suspect he'll garner more than that given his superior history of production as compared to Walker's.

As for New York's in-house running back options, Skattebo, who is recovering from a significant ankle injury but is expected to be ready by training camp, is exactly the kind of physical runner head coach John Harbaugh is apparently looking for, so it's at least a bit surprising the Giants aren't set with him.

Tracy isn't anywhere close to the kind of physical runner Skattebo is, but he does offer a much-needed speed element, which is a nice complement.

If the Giants do bring in one of the three running backs mentioned, Skattebo's role is going to decrease and Tracy would fall to the RB3 role, although we would peg him as a trade candidate in that scenario, also.
