The World Baseball Classic has thinned the Boston Red Sox's spring training roster a bit and opened up a big opportunity for shortstop Franklin Arias.

According to The Boston Herald's Mac Cerullo, the top prospect Arias will get the start at shortstop for the Red Sox when they take on the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday.

Arias has quickly established himself as one of the organization's top talents since signing as an international free agent from Venezuela in January 2023 for $525,000.

Debuting professionally in the Dominican Summer League at age 17, he posted a strong .350/.440/.453 line in 37 games. In 2024, he dominated the complex leagues and advanced to Low-A, slashing .309/.409/.487 with nine home runs and 35 stolen bases across levels, showcasing elite contact skills and defensive prowess at shortstop.

The 2025 season marked a major leap forward. Starting in Low-A Salem, Arias earned rapid promotions after a solid start, moving to High-A Greenville and finishing the year in Double-A Portland with the Sea Dogs. Across 116 games and three levels, he hit .278/.335/.388 with eight home runs, 66 RBIs, and 12 stolen bases, maintaining an impressive low strikeout rate around 10% while displaying advanced plate discipline and reliable glovework.

Now 20 years old (born November 19, 2005), Arias enters 2026 ranked as the Red Sox's No. 1 or No. 2 prospect and a consensus top-50 talent league-wide—reaching as high as No. 12 in some evaluations. Scouts praise his high baseball IQ, plus hit tool, and potential to stick at shortstop long-term, with added strength from an offseason where he gained nine pounds fueling optimism for further power development.
