Mikey Bell's two-run home run in the second inning proved to be enough for Gonzaga to beat No. 13 Oklahoma in the series finale of the teams' three-game set. Oklahoma took the opener, 14-4, in eight innings and Game 2 on Saturday, 11-1, in seven.
So Sunday's loss really wasn't much of a sweat for the Sooners.
Zags starter Karsten Sweum threw well enough to keep OU's offense off-balance. He gave up three hits and one run - a Brendan Brock solo home run in the sixth inning - while walking just one and striking out seven. Other than Brock's homer, the Sooners had just one runner get past second base all game.
OU had a chance to take the first lead of the game in the second inning when Nolan Stevens singled up the middle to move Drew Dickerson over the third after Dickerson walked. But Sweum induced a groundout from Jason Walk to get out of the inning. Bell then socked his home run the next half-inning with two outs.
The game stayed close until the eighth when Gonzaga batted around. They scored three runs off Jackson Cleveland and two off Gavyn Jones to break things open with five runs. Landon Hood then struck out the side in the bottom of the inning to end things.
The loss is just Oklahoma's second of the season. The Sooners will be back in action in Norman for a one-off game against Dallas Baptist on Tuesday then they'll host Santa Clara for a three-game series the following weekend.
